What does a court reporter do?
This is the first and most important question about court reporting. In Canada, court reporters are most likely not actually appearing in court! Court reporters will work with lawyers pre-trial, meaning at the stage of cross-examinations or discoveries (in America, they’re called depositions! You may be familiar with those from TV). The court reporter is responsible for recording the audio and visual of the proceedings and creating comprehensive notes to prepare a transcriptionist for transcribing the legal proceedings. You can also expand your skill level to become a transcriptionist. Transcribing is another excellent way to make money while travelling, setting your own schedule and working from your computer.
What skills do I need to become a court reporter?
You should possess a strong command of the English language, if you’re working with English-speaking lawyers, a professionalism and excellent time management skills. You do not need a university or College degree. You may be in fact a student while becoming and working as a court reporter.
